I draw every painting in full detail to solidify the composition early. An underpainting is done then to lock in the value structure. Subsequent glaze layers help to push depth in the shadows while opaque layers help push the light, as well as the foam. What this all means for this specific painting is that I am most affected by the moments after a dramatic sunrise and before the day fully underway. There’s a magical connection to Nature, the past and a nostalgia that is very much affecting me all the time. I don’t know how to put into words that feelings that exist in my mind in moments like the one in this painting, but it’s the shadows that ground the scene. They make you understand that this is specific moment that isn’t going to last long, so enjoy it because it’ll never come again. There’s of course one exception to that, and that’s a painting, like Morning Shadows. It will last forever and in your home.
